Dr Charles Thorne

Dr. Thorne received his BA from Yale, served for two years in the Peace Corps in West Africa, attended UCLA School of Medicine, and trained in Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and in Plastic Surgery at NYU. After completing a fellowship in Pediatric and Craniofacial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Thorne joined the NYU faculty in 1989.
Dr. Thorne has served as Chief of Plastic Surgery at Bellevue Hospital, Director of the Plastic Surgery residency program at NYU, Section Editor for the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, President of the Northeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, Editor-in-Chief of Grabb and Smith’s Plastic Surgery and Chair of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Thorne moved to Lenox Hill in 2014 where he is Chairman of the new Department of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Thorne’s clinic practice consists of pediatric and craniofacial reconstruction with a particular interest in reconstruction of the external ear.

  • Describe relevant inner and outer ear anatomy, including tissue layers and neurovascular supply
  • Evaluate patients with microtia and outline possible surgical options for auricle reconstruction as well as functional considerations for hearing optimization
  • Describe common congenital ear malformations and reconstructive approach with respect to age (infantile vs paediatric/adult)
  • Discuss various methods for otoplasty (cartilaginous vs alloplastic framework) and techniques (Brent, Nagata, Firmin)
  • Understand postoperative management and common complications associated with surgery in patients with auricle defects
