From the Roadside to the Trauma Bay: Mr. Dennis Ntabo Nyang'au on Essential Emergency Care

From the frontlines of emergency care in Nakuru, Mr. Dennis Ntabo Nyang'au shares how systematic clinical training provides a vital framework for saving lives in Kenya’s most unpredictable environments.

Surgical professionals around the world use SURGhub to improve patient outcomes. In this series we highlight their stories.
Based in Nakuru, Kenya, Mr. Nyang'au serves as a volunteer with the Kenya Red Cross Society, operating on the frontlines of emergency and disaster response. In a setting where resources are often limited and time is the most critical factor his work focuses on the vital intersection of rapid intervention and continuous professional development.

“My journey into healthcare was inspired by a combination of curiosity, compassion, and the realities I witnessed growing up and working in challenging environments.” Mr Nyang'au says reflecting on what made him pursue a career in healthcare. His commitment to humanitarian work began early, volunteering with the Kenya Red Cross Society during his secondary school years and later serving during the height of the post-election violence period.

These early experiences demonstrated how fragile life can be and the profound difference that skilled, timely care can make for those in distress. For Mr. Nyang'au, encountering communities affected by emergencies and extreme conditions was a defining moment, noting that "witnessing humanitarian suffering firsthand secured my path" towards a lifelong mission of serving where help is most urgently needed.

In his daily practice, Mr. Nyang'au frequently faces situations where critical supplies, equipment, and personnel are scarce. Whether responding to road accidents, floods, or medical crises, he relies on adaptive problem-solving to change patient outcomes. To support this work, he turned to SURGhub to access essential training on Essential Emergency and Critical Care (EECC).
Mr. Nyang'au is currently working as a humanitarian emergency care volunteer with the Kenya Red Cross Society. Providing essential emergency, health, and development services.

"EECC ensures that critically ill patients receive the care they need"

The lessons learned from this online training reinforced his belief that early recognition and rapid intervention are the cornerstones of resilient healthcare. He strongly advocates for these systematic standards because "EECC ensures that critically ill patients receive the care they need in all hospitals worldwide," Mr Nyang'au says.

The real-world impact of this systematic approach became clear during a paramedic night shift in Nairobi. Mr. Nyang'au responded to a distress call regarding a hit-and-run victim on a busy highway. The team found an unconscious man, bleeding heavily from an open leg fracture and dangerously unstable. Working decisively amidst the chaos of speeding traffic, they applied the core principles of EECC to stabilise the patient.

By the time they reached the trauma bay, the patient’s vital signs had significantly improved. Two weeks later, the man was conscious and on track for discharge.

"EECC principles are safe, affordable, and effective—not just in hospitals, but in pre-hospital emergency care"

This successful outcome reinforced why structured, accessible training is vital for frontline responders who must make rapid decisions under extreme pressure. The case proved that "EECC principles are safe, affordable, and effective—not just in hospitals, but in pre-hospital emergency care,” Mr. Nyang'au states “they are providing a life-saving bridge from the roadside to the trauma bay.”

Mr. Nyang'au envisions a future where every patient, regardless of their location, can access safe and effective care. He continues to mentor others and advocate for patient-centred care, believing that even small, consistent actions—when backed by knowledge—can profoundly impact lives.

His advice to those starting their journey in medicine is to remain curious and embrace learning as a lifelong mission. By combining skill, empathy, and dedication, he believes healthcare providers can transform outcomes and ensure that no one is left behind.
