New Research from Türkiye: Addressing delays in breast cancer diagnosis and surgery

New research published by Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University, in partnership with the Global Surgery Foundation (GSF) and UNITAR, reveals reasons for delays in diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

1,300 Women Surveyed in Türkiye

New research from 1,322 women across seven regions in Türkiye investigated the sources of delays for women in diagnosing and treating breast cancer. Researchers found the biggest delays were related to patients’ lack of knowledge and fear of death.

1/3 of Women Did Not Know to Perform Breast Self-Exams

The study found that one-third of women with breast cancer did not know how to perform breast self-exams (BSE). BSEs are critical to early detection, which can lead to early surgical intervention and better prognosis.

A Partnership For Value

This research, published in the European Journal of Public Health, was led by Dr. Güldeniz Çakmak from Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University, in partnership with the GSF and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, and supported by Takeda Pharmaceuticals.

The partnership, including representation from the Ministry of Health, aimed to increase knowledge around breast cancer surgical care and patient- and provider-reported factors, with the goal of increasing value to the patient.
