Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the essential role of perioperative nurses in surgical care. Through 11 structured modules, learners will explore key aspects of perioperative nursing, from understanding the surgical environment and patient care before, during, and after surgery to mastering teamwork, resource management, and ethical considerations. The course also covers critical topics such as surgical equipment, communication strategies, resilience, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in nursing. This course provides an introduction to perioperative nursing, focusing on the key responsibilities and best practices that ensure safe and effective care throughout the surgical process. It covers essential topics such as patient care before, during, and after surgery, the use of surgical equipment, teamwork, and communication, as well as the ethical considerations that guide perioperative nursing practice. While originally designed for aspiring perioperative nurses in the US, the principles explored are adaptable and can be applied across diverse healthcare settings, including those in low resource settings, to improve perioperative care and outcomes.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Define the role, responsibilities, and key competencies of a perioperative nurse in the surgical setting
- Explain the perioperative nurse’s role in patient care before, during, and after surgery, emphasizing patient advocacy and safety.
- Demonstrate appropriate use of surgical equipment, instruments, and personal protective equipment (PPE) in the operating room
- Compare and contrast different surgical environments, identifying potential risks and the perioperative nurse’s role in mitigating them.
- Assess challenges faced by perioperative nurses, proposing strategies to enhance teamwork, communication, resilience, and job satisfaction
