Dr. Robert Menard

Dr. Menard is the Surgical Director of the Northern California Kaiser Permanente Regional Craniofacial Clinic, where he oversees the surgical care of infants, children, adolescents, and adults with cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies. He graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, with a B.A. in both Classics and Molecular Biology and Biochemistry and was a United States Fulbright Scholar who studied in Rome, Italy under Nobel Prize Winner, Dr. Rita Levi-Montalcini. Dr. Menard went on to receive his Medical Degree from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1992, where he graduated with the Dean's Award for Excellence in Clinical Medicine. He then completed General Surgery and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery residencies at Stanford. Prior to joining Kaiser Permanente in 1998, Dr. Menard completed a one-year fellowship in craniofacial surgery at the Australian Craniofacial Unit in Adelaide, South Australia, specializing in craniofacial surgery and endoscopic and facial recontouring techniques.
His medical interests include craniofacial surgery and cosmetic surgery. In the past twenty years, Dr. Menard has performed over 10,000 plastic and reconstructive procedures, including craniofacial procedures such as endoscopic craniosynostosis correction, cleft lip and palate repair, and correction of complex craniofacial anomalies.

  • Describe relevant labial and midface anatomy of unilateral and bilateral cleft lips, including tissue layers and anatomic units
  • Understand the embryologic basis for cleft lip and palate formation
  • Describe the process for marking and completing a Millard unilateral and bilateral cleft repair, as well as common complications associated with such
  • Describe relevant palatal anatomy, including the muscles associated with speech and swallowing
  • Evaluate hard, soft, and submucous cleft palates and recommend relevant approaches for repair, including the Furlow, Von Langenbeck, V-Y pushback, and Dorrance techniques
