Dr. Derrick Wan is a craniofacial surgeon, researcher, and Johnson and Johnson Distinguished Professor in surgery and neurosurgery at Stanford University. Dr. Wan received his medical education at Columbia University. He attended residency in plastic surgery at UCLA followed by a fellowship in craniofacial surgery. He also completed a fellowship in microsurgery at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan.

  • Describe relevant scalp anatomy, including tissue layers and neurovascular supply
  • Evaluate scalp defects and determine appropriate reconstructive approach, including primary closure, local and free flaps, skin grafting, tissue expansion, and negative pressure therapy
  • Understand management of scalp defects involving underlying hardware and other oncologic concerns, such as radiation therapy
  • Discuss operative techniques to avoid postop alopecia and the treatment thereof
  • Understand postoperative management and common complications associated with surgery in patients with scalp defects
