Team Tibial Fracture Fixation (TFF)

Winners of the runner-up award for the Global Surgical Training Challenge, TFF team developed a training module to teach medical officers and surgeons who are not orthopaedic specialists on how to handle tibial fracture fixation - one of the most common orthopaedic injuries in the world.

This Nigeria based team uses open source, locally reproducible, high fidelity 3D printed bone simulation models to educate and empower non-specialist physicians to perform external fixation procedures as part of the surgical management of open tibial shaft fractures to save limbs and lives.

This module teaches essential irrigation and debridement, powered and manual drilling, and modular external fixation skills that are transferable to the performance of other limb-saving and life-saving surgeries that require hardware stabilization and fixation.

These skills can be used to prevent needless suffering, disability, and deaths for the estimated 133 million patients who sustain extremity and pelvic fractures globally every year.

CrashSavers Team

The CrashSavers Team is dedicated to teaching first responders how to stop bleeding in order to prevent deaths from hemorrhagic injuries.

They were one of four Finalists in the Global Surgical Training Challenge in 2022.

The educational material they developed is associated with both digital and physical simulation to teach learners how to apply pressure, packing, tourniquets, and balloon compression to stop bleeding in the field so that patients are stabilized for transfer to definitive care.

Their mission is to empower paramedics in Guatemala with the skills, competence, and confidence to perform different hemorrhage control techniques as part of the initial trauma triage in the pre-hospital environment.

ALL SAFE

ALL-SAFE (African Laparoscopic Learners – Surgical Advancement For Ectopic pregnancy) is an international collaboration of surgeons and other subject matter experts who develop surgical self-training modules to teach surgeons in low-resource settings to perform laparoscopic surgery without expensive simulators.

In 2023, ALL-SAFE won the Global Surgical Training Challenge Grand Prize with their module that teaches necessary skills and confidence to perform laparoscopic treatment of ectopic pregnancy in resource-constrained settings.

Amosmile

Team AmoSmile is a collaboration created for the Global Surgery Training Challenge. It is comprised of a global team of clinical and technological experts from Operation Smile and Amodisc.

The AmoSmile mission is to facilitate confidence and competence in performing local flaps for the treatment of burns, trauma, cancer, and congenital anomalies.

Their vision is to provide high-quality and freely accessible training modules to expand the reconstructive surgery workforce in resource-constrained settings.
