SURGhub Reaches Historic Milestone: Over 30,000 Learners Now Registered on UN-Backed Platform

A growing global community of over 30,000 learners highlights SURGhub’s impact on accessible, digital surgical education.

SURGhub celebrates an important milestone as over 30,000 healthcare professionals worldwide join the UN-backed platform for surgical training.
Geneva, Switzerland — SURGhub, the United Nations Global Surgery Learning Hub, has officially surpassed 30,000 registered learners, marking a major turning point in the global effort to democratize access to surgical education.

Launched in June 2023, the platform has grown rapidly to become a critical resource for frontline healthcare workers in over 200 countries and territories.

This milestone comes on the heels of another significant achievement: SURGhub was recently named the Winner of the 2025 QS Reimagine Education Award for Best E-Learning Project, further cementing its status as the leader in digital surgical education.

The Rapid Adoption of SURGhub Highlights the Enormous Need

The rapid adoption of SURGhub highlights an urgent, unmet demand for accessible medical training. According to global health data, nearly one-third of worldwide mortality is linked to surgically treatable conditions, yet an estimated 17 million people die annually due to a lack of access to safe surgical care.

SURGhub was designed to bridge this gap by delivering high-quality and low-bandwidth-friendly training directly to the mobile devices of healthcare professionals who need it most.

"Reaching 30,000 learners is an important milestone in equipping healthcare providers globally to save lives in their communities," said a spokesperson for the initiative. "From conflict zones to remote rural clinics, SURGhub is proving that geography should never be a barrier to life-saving knowledge."

Data indicates that the majority of SURGhub’s users originate from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), fulfilling the platform's core mission to support underserved regions.

The Road to 100,000 Healthcare Workers

With the 30,000-learner milestone secured, SURGhub is looking ahead. The team has announced a new, ambitious goal to reach 100,000 healthcare workers.

To help achieve this, SURGhub recently launched the Ambassador Programme, a global initiative designed to empower local leaders to advocate for digital training and peer-to-peer learning within their own institutions and networks.
